Bumper Wheat Production Expected

New Delhi: With a significant increase in the sowing area and favorable weather conditions, a bumper wheat crop is expected in the country during the current Rabi season. This is likely to ensure a smooth supply and availability situation next year as well.
The Food Corporation of India (FCI) has a substantial stock of wheat, although the pace of its offloading has been slow.
An attempt was made to sell wheat from the central pool under the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS), but the scheme was suspended after receiving a lukewarm response from flour millers/processors.
The Union Agriculture Ministry has estimated wheat production at 117.9 million tonnes for the 2024-25 Rabi season and has set a target of 119 million tonnes for the 2025-26 season.
However, one institution believes that if the weather remains satisfactory in the coming months, the production of this most important food grain of the Rabi season could surge to over 120 million tonnes, which would be an all-time high. Some optimistic analysts are even estimating production to reach 122 million tonnes.
Wheat sowing is progressing well. Sowing has been completed in Punjab and Haryana, and is in its final stages in Rajasthan, western Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
Wheat sowing has also progressed considerably in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. However, vigorous sowing is still underway in Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh, and other states.
