Hyderabad. The Telangana government has appealed to the Union Textiles Minister to direct the Cotton Corporation of India (CII) to begin procuring cotton from farmers in the state at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) from October 1.

Approximately 1.752 million hectares of cotton is cultivated in Telangana this year, and cotton production is expected to reach 2.47 million tons.

The Telangana Agriculture Minister stated that most cotton producers are small and medium-sized farmers, and their livelihoods depend on government procurement.

The wholesale market price of cotton is low, so the CCI should begin procuring cotton from farmers at the minimum support price as soon as possible.

Last week, the state government held a meeting with representatives of the CCI, the Ginning Mills Association, and officials from the Marketing Department, where the cotton production and price realization scenario for farmers during the current season were discussed.

According to the Agriculture Minister, although the Cotton Corporation of India issued tenders twice, ginning units did not participate because they were having difficulties with some of the terms and conditions in the corporation's new guidelines.

The Agriculture Minister directed the Marketing Department to form monitoring committees at procurement centers to ensure that cotton growers receive a fair price for their produce in a timely manner.
