Canada Market
Peas:
- The recent announcement of a 100% tariff on pea imports into China has caused turmoil in the market.
- As a result, pea acreage may shift toward other pulse crops.
- Overall supply is still expected to be heavy heading into the new marketing year.
- Prices have already softened, and if the decline continues, demand from other Asian markets could increase.
- Yellow peas are priced around $9.50/bu (FOB farm), while green peas are trading at $16.00/bu on limited tonnage.
- For new crop pricing, most buyers have moved to a "no bid" approach.
~~~~~~~
Lentils:
- After a period of global market pressure, the lentil market has stabilized.
- New crop small green lentils are priced below 40 cents/lb (FOB farm), while large green lentils are trading at 43-44 cents/lb (FOB farm) for September to December delivery.
- Old crop large greens are trading at 55 cents/lb (FOB farm), while small greens are at 48-50 cents/lb (delivered).
- Red lentils are trading in the 31-32 cent/lb range for old crop, while new crop prices are around 27-28 cents/lb (on-farm).
- Overall, the lentil market remains quiet for this time of year.
~~~~~~~
Kabuli Chickpeas:
- Old crop prices are hovering around $0.30-$0.33/lb (FOB farm).
- Increased chickpea production in India has raised competition in international markets.
- The U.S. still holds a large stockpile of Kabuli chickpeas.
