Canadian Lentil Production Estimated to Decline, Export Pressure Likely
★ Canada's national statistics agency, Statistics Canada, in its March report, projected 2025-26 lentil seeded area at 4.174 million acres, slightly lower than 4.211 million acres in 2024-25.
★ According to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC), assuming average yields, total lentil production in 2025-26 is expected to be around 2.325 million tonnes, down by 4% compared to the previous year.
★ Export projections for both 2024-25 and 2025-26 marketing years remain unchanged at 2.1 million tonnes, with carryover stocks at 305,000 tonnes.
★ An updated estimate of seeded acreage will be released on June 27, which will provide clearer direction for the global lentil market.
★ This projected decline may particularly impact major importers like India, which sources a significant volume of lentils from Canada.
★ An Eye should also be kept on Australian lentil crop developments.
