CCI Cotton Sales: Reduced Sowing May Support Prices
★ Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) is witnessing strong sales amid rising demand from spinning mills and traders, coupled with limited stocks in the private trade. As of July 11, CCI has sold 67.09 lakh bales (each 170 kg) of cotton in the 2024–25 marketing season. The corporation had procured over 1 crore bales at Minimum Support Price (MSP) earlier this season.
★ In recent days, demand for cotton has increased significantly from both mills and traders. Currently, CCI remains the largest stockholder, making its cotton highly sought after in the market.
★ Cotton demand is robust and continues to rise. Initially, CCI lowered prices to attract buyers, but over the past few weeks, it has been steadily increasing them. Cotton prices, which were earlier in the range of ₹55,000–₹55,500 per candy (356 kg), have now risen to ₹57,000.

★ Lower cotton prices appear to be impacting sowing activity. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, as of July 11, 2025, cotton had been sown across 92.83 lakh hectares in India—down from 95.22 lakh hectares during the same period last year, a decline of 2.39 lakh hectares.
★ The normal area under cotton cultivation is about 129.50 lakh hectares. This season, cotton sowing is lagging, and private stock levels are also low. With the new crop not expected to arrive before October, prices are likely to remain firm in the near term.
