New Delhi. Due to heavy government procurement of rice and wheat during the Kharif and Rabi marketing seasons of 2024-25, the gross stock of food grains in the central pool has increased to a very comfortable level and there is no threat to national food security in the near future. This year, a strong increase is also being seen in the production area of Kharif paddy.

According to the official data available, on August 1, 2025, a total stock of 726.33 lakh tonnes of food grains was present in the central pool, which included 379.72 lakh tonnes of rice and 346.61 lakh tonnes of wheat.

Stock of 332.39 lakh tonnes of rice and 129.32 lakh tonnes of wheat was available in the warehouses directly owned by the Food Corporation of India (FCI). Similarly, other provincial agencies had a stock of 47.33 lakh tonnes of rice and 217.29 lakh tonnes of wheat left.

Apart from this, there was a stock of 213.52 lakh tonnes of paddy and 5.47 lakh tonnes of coarse grains in the central pool.

This stock of paddy has been allotted to rice millers for custom milling, in return for which rice is to be supplied to the Food Corporation. In this way, the stock of rice will increase regularly.

Not only this, but from the coming month of October, the harvesting and preparation of the new crop of paddy and government procurement will also begin, due to which its stock in the central pool will increase rapidly.

This time the Punjab government has requested the Center to start purchasing paddy from the farmers of the state from September 15 instead of the traditional date of October 1, because its cultivation had started early there.
