China Imposes 100% Tariff on Canadian Peas, Russia to Benefit
★ In 2023-24, Russia exported 1.1 million tonnes of peas to China, while Canada sold 955,663 tonnes.
★ Canada has limited options, as India's duty-free window for importing peas will close on May 31, and Canada’s new crop will be harvested after that. Additionally, U.S. President Donald Trump has also threatened a 25% tariff on Canadian goods, further complicating exports.
★ Canadian farmers may shift to growing other pulses instead of peas, potentially leading to a decline in pea cultivation.
