Karnal. The Union Agriculture Ministry in its third advance estimate has expressed the possibility of domestic wheat production increasing to an all-time high of 1129.20 lakh tonnes during the 2023-24 Rabi season, which is 2.9 percent more than the estimated production of 1105.50 lakh tonnes for the 2022-23 season. Scientists of the Indian Wheat and Barley Research Institute located in Karnal,
Haryana say that this time the yield rate and total production of wheat increased well due to the long cold weather and sowing in a larger area amid new and advanced development.
The increase in the minimum support price of wheat from Rs 2125 per quintal for 2022-23 to Rs 2275 per quintal for the 2023-24 season encouraged the farmers to take good care of their crop.
According to the institute, due to favorable weather, the average productivity of wheat at the national level reached an all-time high of 3615 kg per hectare.
According to a leading agricultural scientist of the institute, the tremendous increase on both the fronts of average yield rate and total production can be considered quite pleasant.
This situation occurred when the sowing area of wheat was reduced from 314 lakh hectares to 312.30 lakh hectares.
The available data shows that the combined contribution of the top five states - Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab,
Haryana and Rajasthan in the total domestic production of wheat was 91.6 percent, while the remaining contribution was of other states including Bihar, Maharashtra and Gujarat.
Except Madhya Pradesh, the yield rate of wheat in the rest of the four top producing states was above the national average of 3615 kg per hectare this time.
Under this, the average productivity rate of wheat was recorded at 5060 kg per hectare in Punjab, 4674 kg in Haryana, 3938 kg in Rajasthan and 3804 kg per hectare in Uttar Pradesh.
