Kochi. Despite increased copra supply and availability in major producing markets, coconut oil prices remain bullish and firm as buyers are showing strong interest in purchasing.

According to industry analysts, a severe copra supply crisis persisted for a long time, keeping prices high.

A shortage of supplies in major producing countries like Indonesia and Sri Lanka increased global export demand for Indian coconut, leading to a spike in prices. It will take some time for prices to moderate.

Although the trading community was expecting copra prices to ease after Onam, as the harvesting season was beginning, coconut oil prices rose to a high of ₹362 per kg in Kerala and ₹310 per kg in Tamil Nadu.

These are wholesale market prices. Similarly, copra prices rose to ₹222 per kg in Kerala and ₹217 per kg in Tamil Nadu.

The president of the Cochin Oil Merchants' Association (COMA) says that while prices of copra and coconut oil often fall after the Onam festival, this time the situation is different.

The retail market price of coconut oil is hovering around ₹390 per kg, forcing traditional consumers to turn to cheaper edible oils.

The high price of copra is severely impacting the coconut oil industry, threatening the closure of small mills. The procurement price of copra, including taxes, is hovering around ₹250 per kg.
