Continuous rain and moist weather poses threat to soybean crop

Indore. Although good rainfall during southwest monsoon is generally helping in the development of Kharif crops,
regular rains, moist weather and lack of sunlight due to clouds in some important soybean producing areas have increased the possibility of spread of pest and disease infestation in the crop.
An advisory issued by the Indore-based Indian Soybean Research Institute states that pest and disease infestation has started on soybean crop in many other areas including Ratlam and Ujjain in the most prominent producing state- Madhya Pradesh. Farmers in the affected areas should implement protective measures.
Soybean, cotton, maize and pulse crops are cultivated on a large scale during Kharif season in Madhya Pradesh. Soybean is the most important oilseed crop there.
The process of grain setting has started in the early sown soybean crop, while flowers have started appearing in the late sown crop.
This time is very important for the progress of the crop and at such a time it is necessary to keep it safe from the deadly attack of insects and diseases.
According to agricultural experts, generally the current rain is beneficial for the soybean crop but along with this, sunlight is also necessary for the crop.
Due to cloudy sky and intermittent rains, not only the progress of the crop is getting affected but the risk of spread of insect attack has also increased.
During the sowing season in Madhya Pradesh, the weather remained hot and dry for a long time and hence the dire need of rain was felt but now when the rains have started,
it has become dangerous for the crops. Due to excessive rain, the fields of the lower areas have been flooded and there may be a huge decline in the yield rate of soybean.
