Decline in Turmeric Prices: Trading Volume Low
15-May-2026 07:29 PM
New Delhi. During the current week, turmeric prices were quoted on a bearish note. However—with the exception of Marathwada—the arrival of turmeric at markets in other producing centers has begun to decline, as the majority of the produce has already reached the markets. It is noteworthy that in Marathwada, the arrival of new produce typically commences later compared to other regions. Currently, the inflow of new turmeric in Marathwada is proceeding at a healthy pace. According to available information, the daily arrival of new turmeric in Basmat stands at 8,000 to 10,000 bags, while Hingoli and Nanded are witnessing a daily trading volume of 7,000 to 8,000 bags each. Conversely, in Nizamabad, the arrival of new turmeric has dropped to between 3,000 and 3,500 bags. In Sangli, arrivals are currently hovering between 5,000 and 6,000 bags. Erode is also recording a daily arrival of 5,000 to 6,000 bags. Market sources indicate that approximately 900,000 to 1 million bags of turmeric have arrived in the Nizamabad region so far, against reports suggesting a total production of 1.2 to 1.3 million bags. Furthermore, estimates suggest that 800,000 to 900,000 bags have arrived in the Erode region; during the current season, turmeric production in the Erode belt is projected to be between 1.3 and 1.4 million bags. In the Sangli region, 70 to 75 percent of the total produce has already reached the markets. Turmeric production in the Sangli region this year is estimated at 1 to 1.2 million bags. Trade estimates for the Marathwada region project this year's turmeric production to be between 3 million and 3.2 million bags. Sources suggest that, due to the delayed start of arrivals, the inflow of new turmeric in the Marathwada region is expected to remain robust for the time being. Additionally, while arrivals are occurring in the Warangal region, they are not meeting expectations; current arrivals in Warangal stand at 2,000 to 2,500 bags. Arrivals in Duggirala are currently ranging between 1,000 and 1,500 bags.
Decline in Prices
Turmeric prices witnessed a decline due to weak demand in the spot market. During the current week, turmeric rates in the mandis (markets) of producing centers were quoted lower by ₹200–₹300 per quintal. In the Delhi market as well, the price for single-polished turmeric bundles has dropped to ₹148–₹150, down from ₹150–₹152 just a week ago. Sources indicate that exports are being adversely affected by the prevailing unrest in Middle Eastern countries. Exports to Bangladesh remain sporadic.
Outlook
It is anticipated that if export demand picks up in the coming days, turmeric prices are bound to witness a surge. This projection is based on the fact that, in addition to dwindling carry-over stocks, production is also estimated to fall short of expectations. Although the area under cultivation in producing centers saw an increase of 30–35% this year, the crop suffered damage due to adverse weather conditions following the sowing period.
Exports
During the first ten months (April–January 2026) of the current financial year (2025–26), turmeric exports totaled 151,933 tonnes, generating export revenue of ₹2,445.51 crore. In comparison, during the corresponding period of the previous year (April–January 2025), turmeric exports stood at 148,691 tonnes, yielding export revenue of ₹2,425.87 crore. Notably, the total turmeric exports for the full financial year 2024–25 (April–March) amounted to 176,325 tonnes.
