Desi Chickpea Market Webinar (20 September 2025): Global Pulses Confederation
Country-wise views of Specialists:
Tanzania (Sameer Ismail):
★ Tanzania, via TMX, traded about 100,000 tons of Desi chickpea, with 20,000 tons remaining unsold without online auctions.
★ Estimated total crop: 170,000–180,000 tons, most of which is destined for Pakistan.
★ Prices during the first auction started at 873 shillings/ton and reached 1,982 shillings/ton in the third auction, currently 923 shillings.
~~~~~~~~~
★ TMX auction volumes are declining week by week: 30 August – 21,599 MT, 6 September – 18,077 MT, 20 September – 12,833 MT, 26 September – 9,100 MT, 29 September – 2,584 MT.
India (Binod Agarwal):
★ ABARES projected Australia’s crop at 2.1 million tons; trade believes it is closer to 2.4 million tons.
★ Indian market sentiment is weak; recent trades were $470–480/MT, up $20 recently.
★ If import duty remains unchanged, the market may trade around $450–470/MT.
★ Floods have affected Pigeon pea, Urad, and Moong crops.
~~~~~~
Estimated stocks in India:
★ Imports at various ports: 300,000 tons
★ Government stock: 348,000 tons
★ Local Desi chickpea stock: 1,000,000 tons
★ Total: 1,648,000 tons (equivalent to about 3 months of consumption).
★ Fear of duty on Yellow pea is suppressing demand.
★ Supply from Australia is expected to start in October, which may keep prices under pressure.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Australia (Jay Saraf):
★ Australia had excellent chickpea crops over the past 2 years. Good rains and clear weather improved productivity.
★ Exact production figures will be available after harvest.
★ Future prices will be determined by India’s demand. Tanzania’s July–September supply acted as support, not competition, for Australia.
★ If prices remain low, some Australian farmers may hold back crops; others may keep beans anticipating higher future prices.
~~~~
★ Australia’s chickpea exports (Q4 2024 – Q2 2025, in million tons): India – 14.03 (Q2 India export – Nil), Pakistan – 2.81, Bangladesh – 2.24, UAE – 0.40, Others – 0.46; total exports – 19.94.
★ Australian chickpea production (ABARES): 2024 – 22.67 million tons, 2025 (expected) – 21.02 million tons.
~~~~~~~~
Pakistan (Faisal Anis):
★ Floods have affected Kharif crops. Imports are expected to reach 25–30,000 tons (September–December), potentially rising to 25–55,000 tons before Ramadan (17 February 2026). Pakistan’s stocks are 25–30,000 tons, indicating higher import requirements.
★ Monthly import trend: January – 25,000, February – 65,000, March – 63,000, April – 49,000, May – 33,000, June – 16,000, July – 13,000, August – 38,000.
★ Annual imports: 2023 – 484,000 tons, 2024 – 181,000 tons, 2025 – 415,000 tons.
~~~~~~~~
Conclusion:
★ Global Desi chickpea prices may trend around $470/MT. India will remain the price-deciding market.
★ When asked how much Australian chickpea can be exported to India until the new Indian crop arrives by IGrain India, the panel noted that last year Australia exported 1.5 million tons to India before the new crop arrived; this year, no shipments are lined up yet as there is currently no demand from India.
★ Market stability will depend on India’s crop situation and import decisions.
