Drop in Sugar Domestic Sale Quota: 5.50 Lakh Tons Decrease in the First Five Months of 2025
★ The domestic sugar sale quota for the period from January to May 2025 has been set at 115 lakh tons, which is 5.50 lakh tons lower compared to 120.5 lakh tons in the same period of 2024.
★ For May 2025, the quota has been fixed at 23.5 lakh tons, equal to April’s quota, whereas it was 27 lakh tons in May 2024.
★ When comparing 2024 to 2023, there was an increase of 4 lakh tons in the first five months.
★ In the calendar year 2023, the total domestic sale quota was 287 lakh tons, while for 2024, it was slightly lower at 285 lakh tons.
★ This reduction in quota may lead to an increase in sugar prices in the market.
★ Due to lower production this year, the opening up of sugar exports, and increased diversion of sugar towards ethanol production, there are expectations of further quota reductions in the coming months.
★ Even before the quota was officially announced today, I-Grain India had predicted this figure in its report.
★ After facing a downturn for the past four years, the sugar industry is hopeful for a better year ahead.
