Edible oil imports may decline in 2024-25: SEA
★ India’s edible oil imports in the 2024-25 oil year (November–October) are expected to fall by around 5% to below 15.5 million tonnes.
★ Record domestic oilseed output has boosted the availability of mustard, soybean, and groundnut oils.
★ According to SEA data, during November–July of the 2024-25 oil year, India’s edible oil imports dropped 9.87% to 10.75 million tonnes. This excludes about 0.5 million tonnes imported from Nepal under SAFTA.
★ Palm oil imports in this period fell 25% to 5.14 million tonnes, reducing its share in total edible oil imports from 57% last year to 48% now.
★ In the 2024-25 crop year (July–June), oilseed production reached a record 42.6 million tonnes, 7.4% higher than the previous year.
★ However, with global prices staying elevated, domestic edible oil prices have also risen and are expected to remain high going forward.
