Buenos Aires. Heavy cyclonic rains in Argentina last month caused severe flooding in several regions, leading to waterlogged fields that are obstructing the harvesting and processing of the corn crop.

Despite these challenges, the Buenos Aires Grains Exchange has maintained its corn production estimate for the 2024–25 marketing season at 49 million tonnes, unchanged from its previous projection.

While rainfall damaged crops in some flood-affected areas, other regions benefited from the moisture, which has contributed to an improvement in average yield in those zones. Due to this mixed impact, the overall production estimate has remained stable.

Harvesting activities have picked up pace in areas where water is receding. Argentina, after the United States and Brazil, is the third-largest exporter of corn globally and ranks fourth in terms of overall production.

However, the moisture content in the harvested corn is reported to be higher than usual, which could impact post-harvest processing.

According to the exchange, around 50 percent of Argentina's maize crop is now ready for harvest. In contrast, soybean harvesting has reached 97 percent completion, and the exchange estimates soybean production to exceed 50 million tonnes.

Argentina is the world’s third-largest producer and exporter of soybeans, and the top exporter of soy oil and soymeal. The country primarily grows genetically modified (GM) varieties of corn and soybeans. India imports a significant portion of its soybean oil from Argentina.
