Ethanol Blending Petrol Programme: Ministry of Food and Public Distribution
★ The Government of India is implementing the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme across the country, under which Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) sell ethanol-blended petrol. Under the EBP Programme, the Government has fixed a target of 20% ethanol blending with petrol by the Ethanol Supply Year (ESY) 2025–26.
★ Up to the year 2014, the ethanol production capacity of molasses-based distilleries was less than 200 crore litres. The supply of ethanol to OMCs was only 38 crore litres, and the blending level during the Ethanol Supply Year 2013–14 was merely 1.53%.
★ Over the past 10 years, the installed ethanol production capacity in the country has increased significantly and reached 1953 crore litres as on 31.10.2025, which includes 980 crore litres of grain-based capacity and 973 crore litres of molasses/dual-feed-based distilleries.
★ During the Ethanol Supply Year (November–October) 2024–25, 19.24% ethanol blending was successfully achieved.
In the last 10 years (2014–15 to 2024–25), sugar mills have earned more than ₹1.29 lakh crore from the sale of ethanol, which has strengthened their financial position.
