Experts’ Views at the Wheat Summit in Mumbai
★ In the near term, wheat prices are expected to remain at current levels with a slight rise of about 2–2.5%.
★ Both government and private players hold high stocks, which can balance festive demand.
★ According to the Food Corporation of India, as of September 1 the central pool has 33.3 million tonnes of wheat stocks — 32% higher than last year and above the buffer norm of 27.58 million tonnes.
★ Due to carryover costs, prices in Delhi may go up to ₹2,900 per 100 kg.
★ The MSP for wheat for 2026–27 is likely to be around ₹2,600 per 100 kg, compared with ₹2,425 in 2025–26.
★ Higher MSP and state bonuses are expected to increase wheat sowing area in the upcoming rabi season.
★ In the 2024–25 rabi season, wheat acreage rose 3% to 33 million hectares and production increased 4% to 117.5 million tonnes.
