Export of Pulses from Myanmar
★ Myanmar exported 1.5 million tonnes of pulses from April to December 2024 during the financial year 2024-2025, including 200,000 tonnes of pigeon peas (tur).
★ Myanmar's total pigeon pea production is estimated at 300,000 tonnes, with expectations of increased yields this year.
★ Myanmar primarily exports black gram, green gram, and pigeon peas. Among these, black gram and pigeon peas are mainly exported to India, while green gram is exported to China and Europe.
★ As per an agreement between Myanmar and India signed on 18 June 2021, India will import 250,000 tonnes of black gram and 100,000 tonnes of pigeon peas annually for five years, from the financial year 2021-2022 to 2025-2026.
★ Recently, India extended the duty-free import policy for pigeon peas until 31 March 2026.
★ This year, India has seen a significant increase in pigeon pea (tur) production, and new stock has started arriving in the markets. ★ However, farmers are unwilling to sell at low prices.
★ The pressure of arrivals in mandis has not yet materialized.
★ With good production and export prospects in Myanmar and Africa this year, the chances of a price increase appear weak.
