Rangoon. During the first half of the current calendar year (January–June 2026), Myanmar—India's northeastern neighbor—exported 395,923 tonnes of Urad (black gram). This figure is lower than the 419,590 tonnes shipped during the same period in 2025. Previously, 474,651 tonnes of Urad were exported from Myanmar during January–June 2024. It is worth noting that Myanmar is the leading exporter and the second-largest producer of Urad globally, with the majority of its exports of this vital pulse destined for India.

Comparing 2026 with 2025, Myanmar's Urad exports showed improvement or growth in several months: rising from 80,266 tonnes to 82,674 tonnes in January; from 69,559 tonnes to 75,038 tonnes in February; from 64,211 tonnes to 64,692 tonnes in May; and surging from 50,119 tonnes to 70,432 tonnes in June. However, exports declined in March (dropping from 89,563 tonnes to 53,962 tonnes) and in April (falling from 65,871 tonnes to 49,125 tonnes).

As for Arhar (Tur/pigeon pea), exports from Myanmar fell from 182,611 tonnes in January–June 2025 to 124,439 tonnes in January–June 2026. Myanmar also supplies the bulk of its Tur exports to India. Total shipments of Tur from the country stood at 189,708 tonnes during January–June 2024. Imports of Tur and Urad into India are exempt from customs duty.

However, the pace of imports of these two pulses from Myanmar into India is observed to be slower this year compared to last year. In 2026, export shipments of Tur (pigeon pea) from Myanmar amounted to 17,160 tonnes in January, 24,756 tonnes in February, 27,269 tonnes in March, 19,309 tonnes in April, 17,299 tonnes in May, and 18,646 tonnes in June; more than 90 percent of this volume reached India.

During the entire year of 2025 (January–December), exports from Myanmar totaled 846,084 tonnes of Urad (black gram) and 365,867 tonnes of Tur, whereas in 2024, the respective quantities were 903,526 tonnes and 299,899 tonnes.
