Festive Demand Likely to Boost Chana, Tuvar-Urad Prices

Mumbai. A leading industry trade body- India Pulses and Grains Association (IPGA) has said in its weekly report that due to festive demand, the price of chana may increase in the near future and there may be some improvement in the prices of Tuvar-Urad as well.

According to the report, due to less supply in the domestic sector, the price of Tuvar is expected to increase a little while the availability of Urad is seen to be complex which may strengthen its price.

According to the report of the association, the wholesale market price of chana is running slightly above the minimum support price (MSP) while it may increase further in the coming time.

The reason for this is that the stock of premium quality chana has decreased considerably while the demand of gram flour manufacturers is expected to increase soon.

It is being imported in limited quantity from abroad. There may be some difficulty in meeting the upcoming festive demand.

There is often a trend of increasing demand and consumption of gram dal and gram flour during the festive season, due to which there is an atmosphere of ups and downs in prices. Its strong demand is expected from September while many festivals will be celebrated in October.

However, large producers and stockists have stock of gram available, due to which a strong rise in prices seems difficult.

Apart from this, there is a possibility of some increase in the import of gram from Australia and Africa in August-September.

Similarly, the pace of import of yellow peas from Canada and Russia may also increase where the arrival of new goods has started.

The government has already announced to keep the import of yellow peas duty free till 31 March 2026, while 10 percent import duty is imposed on gram. Import of Tuvar-Urad will remain duty free till 31 March 2026.

Last week, a mixed trend was seen in the prices of gram in the major markets of the country. In Indore, it has now fallen by Rs 50 on weekly basis to Rs 6425/6450 per quintal, whereas in Akola (Maharashtra) it has improved by Rs 25 to Rs 6450/6475 per quintal.

Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation has issued a tender for the purchase of 60 thousand tonnes of Tuvar or Canadian lentil for October-September delivery, due to which the price of Tuvar may improve.
