Floods and Rains Hit Pulse Crops in Key States

New Delhi. Heavy surplus rainfall, prolonged waterlogging, and localized flooding in the country's major pulse-producing states, particularly in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan, has significantly damaged the mung bean and urad crops, while relatively less damage is being reported to the tur (pigeon pea) crop.
This will impact production. The impact on the quality of pulses may increase the price gap between fine and fine grain, while prices may generally remain somewhat higher.
While monsoon rains were beneficial during the initial stages of sowing and growth of pulse crops, excessive rainfall later created a crisis for the crops.
It is worth noting that India remains self-sufficient in mung bean production, and therefore, the government has banned its import since 2022.
However, due to the production of urad and tur falling short of domestic demand and needs, large quantities of it are required to be imported from abroad. While there is sufficient stock of mung beans in government warehouses, there is negligible stock of black gram remaining.
IGrain India has been repeatedly reporting that black gram prices could rise or strengthen. The market is now becoming favorable for this. Black gram prices have declined less than other pulses.
Arrivals of other Kharif urad crops have begun. Due to crop damage caused by adverse weather, lower quality goods are currently arriving in the markets.
Consequently, demand for high-quality black gram may remain strong in the future. Exporters from supplier countries like Myanmar and Brazil are also waiting for such an opportunity.
Black gram prices are expected to rise there in the near future. The supply of high-quality black gram is also likely to be limited, which could support prices.
Heavy rains have also occurred in the tur-producing areas, but since it is a long-term crop, it is premature to assess the damage to it at this time. For the last two days, there has been a rise in its price which may continue further.
