Global Rice Prices Expected to Remain Firm

Hyderabad. The El Niño weather pattern has led to reduced rainfall across South and Southeast Asia, negatively impacting paddy crops and likely resulting in a decline in rice production. Consequently, global rice prices have begun to rise, and this trend of firming prices is expected to persist.

It is worth noting that these Asian nations account for approximately 90 percent of the world's total rice exports. Major rice-exporting countries include India, Thailand, Vietnam, Pakistan, Myanmar, and Cambodia. Additionally, smaller quantities of rice are exported by other nations, such as the United States and Peru.

Non-basmati rice (standard varieties) is imported on a large scale by the Philippines and various African nations. China is also a significant importer. Furthermore, countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives frequently require rice imports.

Notably, until 2011, the price of Thai rice served as the benchmark in the international export market; however, Indian rice has since taken its place. India has rapidly emerged as the world’s leading rice exporter, capturing a share of over 40 percent of the global export market. Currently, India’s annual rice exports exceed the combined shipments from Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Pakistan.

The export offer price for Indian rice has climbed to a one-year high. Meanwhile, export prices for rice from Thailand and Vietnam remain higher than those for Indian rice. As concerns regarding a potential decline in domestic production drive up rice prices in India, other exporting nations are also expected to raise their own export prices.
