High international prices and increased import costs are providing support to the domestic Kabuli chickpea market. Meanwhile, concerns regarding market availability persist, fueled by talk of exports from Madhya Pradesh and the fact that the arrival of the new harvest is still some time away.
Given these conditions, the trend for Kabuli chickpea prices remains bullish, though future price movements will depend on domestic demand, export activity, and the import situation. Reports indicate that most of the existing stock at Indian ports has already been cleared.
Furthermore, the cost of Kabuli chickpeas arriving from Canada is reported to be high at major ports, including Mundra, Mumbai, and Kolkata. This has pushed up the landed cost of imported stock in markets across North India—including Delhi—thereby providing support to domestic prices. During the recent rally,
Kabuli chickpea prices have surged by approximately ₹400–500 per quintal. Consequently, prices for medium-quality Kabuli chickpeas in Maharashtra have reached the ₹9,600–9,700 per quintal range. Prices for larger-sized (bolder) varieties have also seen an increase of about ₹500–700 per quintal, while prices for lower-quality stock have also strengthened,
depending on their specific quality. Sowing for the new Kabuli chickpea crop is expected to begin next month, while the new harvest is not likely to reach the market for another five months. In the interim, if market availability remains limited and imports continue to be expensive, prices are likely to remain supported.
