New Delhi. Usually, the new marketing season for crushing sugarcane and production of sugar begins from the month of October and in Maharashtra, this process often begins around the Diwali festival.

In the southern states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, crushing of sugarcane begins a little earlier. Government data shows that the production area of sugarcane has increased by 57 thousand hectares from 57.11 lakh hectares last year to a peak of 57.68 lakh hectares this time,

but the leading industry body - Indian Sugar and Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) has said on the basis of satellite image that the area of sowing of sugarcane has lagged behind last year.

The indigenous industry still has sufficient surplus stock of sugar left while there is not much time left for the new production season to begin.

Due to the stoppage of exports, the stock of sugar with the millers has increased. The government is giving priority to ensuring adequate supply and availability of this sweet item in the domestic sector, so despite the industry's repeated requests, it refused to open the door for export.

The festival season has officially begun in the country and especially in northern India, which will continue more or less till mid-November.

Raksha Bandhan and Janmashtami festivals have just passed, while in the coming months many festivals including Ganesh Chaturthi, Navratri, Dussehra, Deepawali and Bhaiya Dooj will be celebrated.

The demand and consumption of sugar often increases during the festive season. This time too, the demand is expected to increase, but there is doubt about a sharp rise in prices because the government can take necessary steps to control the price of sugar.

The free sale quota of sugar for the month of September is going to be announced during the current week. If the quota is fixed at 24-25 lakh tonnes, then there may be stability in the market.
