Rajkot. Despite the tension in Middle East Asia for the last two months, a good increase is being seen in the export shipment of cumin from India and especially Gujarat. Although new cumin is also arriving in Turkey and Syria, but the pace of its business has slowed down.
Data compiled by a leading trade body - Federation of Indian Spice Stack Holders (FISS) shows that during the quarter of July, August and September 2024, cumin exports from India jumped to 52,022 tonnes, which is 128 percent more than the total shipment of 22,830 tonnes in the same months of the year 2023.
During the current year, the export of cumin jumped 153 percent from 7994 tonnes to 20,217 tonnes in July, 88 percent from 7640 tonnes to 14,372 tonnes in August and 142 percent from 7196 tonnes to 17,433 tonnes in September as compared to last year.
Not only this, but during the first seven months of the current marketing season i.e. from March to September 2024, the total export of cumin from India increased to a high of 1,66,132 tonnes, which was 73 percent more than the shipment of 95,951 tonnes in the same period last year.
As a result, the income from the export of cumin also increased significantly. It is noteworthy that Syria, Turkey and Iran are the major producers and exporters of cumin in Middle East Asia, but due to political issues,
production is declining there, due to which the dependence of major importing countries on Indian cumin is increasing. Last year, the production of cumin in India had reduced significantly and its prices had increased to a record level, which affected the export. But during the current year,
due to increase in production and normal prices, importers are showing great interest in its purchase. According to FISS, cumin is mainly produced in Gujarat and Rajasthan in India. When the performance of production and supply of cumin weakened due to tension in Middle East Asia,
these two states played an important role in bridging the gap. The export performance of Indian cumin is expected to remain excellent in the coming months as there is a good stock of it here.
