Good Rise in Coarse Cereals Area Led by Maize

New Delhi. Although in the current Kharif season, the sowing of jowar, bajra and ragi in the category of coarse cereals has been done in less area as compared to last year, but farmers have shown tremendous enthusiasm towards maize cultivation.
As a result, the total production area of coarse cereals has increased to 182.34 lakh hectares this time, which is 9.12 lakh hectares more than last year's sowing area of 173.22 lakh hectares and 1.63 lakh hectares more than the five-year average area of 180.71 lakh hectares. The condition of the crop is generally said to be satisfactory.
According to the latest weekly data of the Union Agriculture Ministry, during the period under review, the production area of Jowar (Sorghum) fell from 13.96 lakh hectares to 13.74 lakh hectares, the area of Bajra (Bajra) slipped from 65.88 lakh hectares to 65.67 lakh hectares and the area of Ragi fell from 6.30 lakh hectares to 5.89 lakh hectares,
but the area of Maize jumped from 82.97 lakh hectares to 92.79 lakh hectares or 11.83 percent, which is much higher than the normal average area of 78.95 lakh hectares. During the same period, the area of Small Millets also improved from 4.12 lakh hectares to 4.25 lakh hectares.
The production area of Maize is increasing as expected. There is news of increase in its area in almost all the major producing states of the country. Due to Maize, the sowing of soybean and cotton has decreased in some states. The government has also increased the minimum support price of this important coarse grain by Rs 175 to Rs 2400 per quintal.
