Government purchase of 1011 lakh tonnes of moong as against the fixed target of 3.34 lakh tonnes

The Indian government has set a target to purchase 3.34 lakh tonnes of moong during the 2024-25 Kharif marketing season, with the aim to support farmers by procuring the crop at the minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 8682 per quintal. As of December 12, 2024, approximately 1.11 lakh tonnes of moong have been procured.
Rajasthan has the largest procurement target of 2.39 lakh tonnes, and has so far procured more than 84,000 tonnes.
Other states such as Karnataka, Telangana, and Maharashtra have made smaller procurements, with Karnataka purchasing 26,205 tonnes against its target of 38,320 tonnes, and Telangana only 990 tonnes out of a 4715-tonne target.
Procurement targets for several states, including Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh, have not yet been started.
The government has also approved the procurement of other pulses, with 9.39 lakh tonnes of urad and 4.91 lakh tonnes of tuvar earmarked for purchase.
While procurement of urad has commenced in Rajasthan (only 19 tonnes so far), tuvar procurement has not yet begun. The MSP for moong, tuvar, and urad is set at Rs 8682, Rs 7550, and Rs 7400 per quintal, respectively.
The government has set deadlines for procurement in various states, with Rajasthan’s deadline set for January 15, 2025, Maharashtra's for January 7, 2025, and Karnataka's for December 18, 2024.
