Government purchase of 1.11 lakh tonnes of moong as against the fixed target of 3.34 lakh tonnes

The central government has set a target of procuring 3.34 lakh tonnes of moong during the 2024-25 Kharif marketing season, with purchases to be made at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of Rs 8,682 per quintal. So far, only 1.11 lakh tonnes of moong have been purchased.

The distribution of procurement targets across states is as follows:

  • Rajasthan: 2.39 lakh tonnes, with over 84,000 tonnes already purchased by December 12.
  • Karnataka: Target of 38,320 tonnes, with 26,205 tonnes purchased.
  • Telangana: Target of 4,715 tonnes, with only 990 tonnes purchased.
  • Maharashtra: Target of 29,108 tonnes, with just 40 tonnes procured.
  • Other States: Procurement targets have been set in Tamil Nadu (3,383 tonnes), Gujarat (8,000 tonnes), Haryana (6,730 tonnes), Uttar Pradesh (4,215 tonnes), and Andhra Pradesh (957 tonnes), but the process has not yet begun in these areas.

The deadlines for procurement are:

  • Rajasthan: January 15, 2025
  • Maharashtra: January 7, 2025
  • Karnataka: December 18, 2024

The government has also approved the purchase of other pulses:

  • Urad: 9.39 lakh tonnes, with specific targets set in states like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Haryana. Only 19 tonnes of urad have been procured in Rajasthan so far.
  • Tuvar: 4.91 lakh tonnes, but no procurement has started yet. Targets include Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Haryana.

The MSP for pulses is Rs 8,682 per quintal for moong, Rs 7,550 per quintal for tuvar, and Rs 7,400 per quintal for urad.
