New Delhi. Food Corporation of India (FCI), an agency subordinate to the Union Food Ministry, has once again started the sale of rice through auction under the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS) with revised reserve price.
According to official sources, under this scheme, 1.28 lakh tonnes of rice has been sold by the Food Corporation through weekly auction since August 6, 2025.
This quantity is different from the sales in the April-June quarter. It is known that at that time the government had extended the time period of rice sale for the financial year 2024-25 till June, whereas originally it was closed in March 2025 itself.
In the quarter of April-June 2025, about 6 lakh tonnes of government rice was sold under this scheme, which was sold at the reserve price of the previous financial year.
The minimum reserve price of wheat and rice for sale in OMSS during the financial year 2025-26 was announced in July and the sale of rice started in August with this revision.
There is a huge stock of rice in the central pool and new rice will also enter it from October-November, so a serious problem of its storage may arise.
In view of this, the government is making every possible effort to reduce the stock of rice. According to the available data, on July 1, 2025, there was a huge stock of about 380 lakh tonnes of rice in the central pool, which was 16 percent more than last year and the highest in the last two decades.
This time the reserve price has been fixed at Rs 2320 per quintal for 100 percent broken rice, Rs 2890 per quintal for 25 percent broken rice and Rs 3090 per quintal for 10 percent broken custom milled rice.
