News Capsule: West Asia Ceasefire Triggers Rice Export Surge, India Wholesale Prices Jump 7%
★ Wholesale rice prices in India have surged sharply, rising nearly 7% over the past two days as export orders jumped after the West Asia ceasefire. During the conflict, rice prices had fallen by around 6% due to disruptions in shipping routes, but sudden demand from the Middle East and the US has reversed the trend.
★ Around 400,000 tonnes of basmati rice shipments were stuck at ports or in transit during the war, disrupting export flows. With the ceasefire now in place, shipments of basmati and non-basmati rice from Mundra and Kandla ports are resuming, boosting exporter confidence.
★ Exporters say the impact may soon reach retail markets within the next 10–15 days, meaning domestic consumers could face higher rice prices. At the same time, payments worth ₹2,000–2,500 crore from markets such as Iran remain pending, putting pressure on trade cash flow.
