Government Wheat Procurement Rises 54% to Nearly 184 Lakh Tonnes

New Delhi, April 28, 2025 – The Food Corporation of India (FCI) and its associated state agencies have significantly stepped up wheat procurement this season. As of April 27, 2025, a total of 183.90 lakh tonnes of wheat has been procured for the central pool, marking a 54% increase compared to 119.30 lakh tonnes during the same period last year. This also represents 59% of the overall procurement target of 312.70 lakh tonnes set for the current season.

Government wheat procurement is expected to continue until June 30. According to official data, procurement has risen notably across major producing states:

  • In Punjab, from 35 lakh tonnes to 59 lakh tonnes,

  • In Haryana, from 48.14 lakh tonnes to 57 lakh tonnes,

  • In Uttar Pradesh, from 4.05 lakh tonnes to 6 lakh tonnes,

  • In Madhya Pradesh, from 29.71 lakh tonnes to 54 lakh tonnes, and

  • In Rajasthan, from 2.32 lakh tonnes to 8.26 lakh tonnes.

Smaller quantities of wheat have also been purchased from states like Bihar, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir.

The Union Food Ministry had targeted procurement of:

  • 124 lakh tonnes from Punjab,

  • 75 lakh tonnes from Haryana,

  • 60 lakh tonnes from Madhya Pradesh,

  • 30 lakh tonnes from Uttar Pradesh, and

  • 20 lakh tonnes from Rajasthan.

Last year, total wheat procurement stood at 266.05 lakh tonnes. With strong procurement performance this year, the government is confident of meeting its target, ensuring better stock availability for domestic market interventions during the off-season and strengthening the central pool reserves.
