Gujarat Kharif Crop Area Crosses 78 Lakh Hectares

Ahmedabad. This time in Gujarat, till August 18, the production area under Kharif crops reached 78.06 lakh hectares, however, it remained 1.17 lakh hectares behind last year's sowing area of 79.23 lakh hectares. During the period under review, the area under upcoming crops including paddy fell from 13.55 lakh hectares to 13.23 lakh hectares,
the production area of cotton fell from 23.58 lakh hectares to 20.68 lakh hectares and the area under Guar slipped from 77 thousand hectares to 68 thousand hectares, while on the other hand, the sowing area under pulses increased from 3.72 lakh hectares to 3.97 lakh hectares and the area under oilseeds jumped from 25.89 lakh hectares to 28.44 lakh hectares.
Among cereal crops, the production area of paddy slipped from 8.73 lakh hectares to 8.70 lakh hectares and maize area fell from 2.85 lakh hectares to 2.74 lakh hectares during the period under review. The area of sorghum also came down from 19 thousand hectares to 7 thousand hectares while the sowing area of millet could reach only 1.62 lakh hectares against 1.64 lakh hectares.
Among pulse crops, the production area of tuvar increased from 2.21 lakh hectares to 2.58 lakh hectares but the sowing area of moong decreased from 54 thousand hectares to 47 thousand hectares and the area of black gram fell from 82 thousand hectares to 76 thousand hectares. In the category of oilseed crops,
the production area of groundnut in Gujarat increased from 19.09 lakh hectare to 20.81 lakh hectare and castor area jumped from 3.33 lakh hectare to 4.48 lakh hectare but the sowing area of soybean decreased from 2.99 lakh hectare to 2.75 lakh hectare and the area of sesame fell from 48 thousand hectare to 40 thousand hectare.
It is worth mentioning that Gujarat is the leading producer of groundnut, castor and cotton. There has been good monsoon rains this year.
