New Delhi. Heavy monsoon rains in the western, central and southern states of the country, waterlogging in the fields and flood scenario are likely to cause large scale damage to pulses, oilseeds and other Kharif crops including cotton. According to agricultural experts,
crops like urad, tuvar, moong, soybean and cotton can suffer more damage because they cannot bear waterlogging for a long time.
Heavy rains have occurred in states like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka and it is still continuing in some places. Due to this, fields have been submerged in a large area.
According to trade analysts, the prices of pulses, edible oils, crops and vegetables in Mumbai have come down in the last few days because due to extremely heavy rains, buyers had great difficulty in reaching the markets.
Along with pulses and oilseeds, vegetable crops have also suffered damage in Maharashtra, so after the rains stop, there can be an environment of increase and strengthening in its prices.
However, due to the presence of adequate stock of pulses and edible oils imported from abroad, it seems difficult for its prices to rise sharply. Import of cotton has also increased.
Pulses and oilseeds crops are also suffering damage in other states, while at the national level its sowing area is not encouraging.
The area of soybean, groundnut and pigeon pea is lagging behind last year, while there has been less increase in the area of moong and urad. In such a situation, if crops are damaged due to natural disasters and production decreases, then not only will the dependence on its import from abroad increase,
but the price in the domestic market can also rise. After a lot of hard work, the government has succeeded in creating an environment of stability in the pulses market, but it seems difficult to maintain stability in the future.
