Heavy rains damage Kharif crops in Karnataka - Rabi crop sowing disrupted

Bangalore. Heavy rains in South India and especially in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka due to the activity of the north-east monsoon are not only causing heavy damage to the Kharif crops standing in the fields but also causing delay in sowing of Rabi crops.
Preparations for harvesting of Kharif crops have already begun in Karnataka. The crops which have now ripened and are ready for harvesting are being damaged by this heavy rain and wet weather. Onion crops are being damaged in many areas of the northern and central parts of Karnataka.
Standing crops in hundreds of acres of land in Bagalkot district have been submerged. There is a possibility of destruction of maize crop, while the Rabi season jowar and gram crops are also in danger.
Many crops are being damaged due to rain in other parts of Bagalkot district as well. Vennehalla stream in Naragund taluk of Gadag district is filled with water and the areas along its banks are flooded.
Due to waterlogging in the fields, the future of many crops is in danger. Due to waterlogging in the fields or high degree of moisture, there will be great difficulty in sowing Rabi crops.
The peanut crop has been damaged in Pavagadh taluk of Tunkur district, due to which its production is likely to decline. Its grains are getting divided in the fields itself.
If the period of rain continues, the peanut crop there may be ruined. There are reports of damage to paddy and cotton crops in some areas.
The Agriculture Department is assessing the damage to crops due to rain and waterlogging. In Chamraj Nagar,
the preparation for harvesting of potato, sunflower and other crops has come to a halt while the crops are also getting damaged.
