Heavy rains in Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur district led to flooding of paddy and groundnut crops
The heavy rains in Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur district have caused extensive damage to agricultural activities, affecting both groundnut and paddy crops:
Peanut Seed Rot Problem:
Affected Areas: Sivandhantla and Ooranipuram in Thiruvonam district, and Kurungulam, Marungulam, Vadakkupattu, Nanjikottai, and Venkatarayan Kinkaddu in Thanjavur district.
Impact: Groundnut crops sown during the Karthik month are at risk of seed rot due to waterlogging during germination.
Samba Paddy Crop Damage:
Submerged Fields: Samba paddy crops in Surkottai, Naikkottai, Kasavalanad, and Thekkur, ready for harvest, were submerged due to rain.
River Overflow: The Konakadungal river in Thiruvaiyaru overflowed, flooding over 1,000 acres of samba, thaladi rice, and banana crops.
Widespread Submersion: Thousands of acres of samba and thaladi rice crops in Ampathumel Nagar, Thittaya, Ammapettai, and Narasimhapuram were submerged under rainwater.
The impact of these floods poses a severe threat to the livelihood of farmers and the region's agricultural productivity.
