Huge import of peas increased pressure on prices of other pulses

The import of yellow peas has indeed had a significant impact on the prices of other pulses in India. While the government’s intention in allowing duty-free imports was to stabilize prices by increasing the supply of pulses, it seems that the unintended consequence has been a disruption in the market for other domestically produced pulses.

As the demand for pulses like gram, tuvar, urad, and lentils has declined due to the availability of cheaper yellow peas, prices have been under pressure.

The concerns raised by industry leaders, such as the Chairman of the India Pulses and Grains Association (IPGA), highlight the need for a balanced policy that ensures both price stability and fair returns for domestic farmers.

The worry is that continued imports of cheaper pulses may lead to a situation where local farmers struggle to sell their produce at profitable prices.

If imported pulses are priced below the Minimum Support Price (MSP), it could disincentivize domestic production and affect farmers' livelihoods.

It seems like the current import policy might need a rethink to strike a balance between consumer prices and the well-being of domestic agricultural producers.

Do you think the government should take action to stop or limit the import of yellow peas, as some have suggested?
