India Becomes Argentina’s Top Buyer of Edible Oils, Exports Soar to Record High
★ By March 2025, Argentina’s soybean oil exports surged to a record 4,85,000 tonnes, significantly exceeding market expectations. ★ India and Nepal together imported 2,44,000 tonnes, while Bangladesh purchased 52,000 tonnes and Pakistan 34,000 tonnes.
★ Sunflower oil exports also saw a sharp 17% increase compared to March 2024, reaching 1,19,000 tonnes. India remained the largest buyer with 47,000 tonnes, nearly double its previous year’s imports of 26,000 tonnes.
★ Argentina exported 2.26 million tonnes of soybean meal, up from 2.16 million tonnes last year. Sunflower meal exports stood at 1,17,000 tonnes.
★ Between November 2024 and March 2025, India imported 1.91 million tonnes of soybean oil— twice the volume from the same period last year.
★ From Argentina: 1.2 million tonnes (up from 450,000 tonnes in 2024) and from Russia 1,62,000 tonnes (down from 415,000 tonnes in 2024) imported.
★ While India’s growing imports were anticipated due to strong domestic demand, the surge in Nepal’s imports has sparked concern among Indian oil producers.
