Brisbane: Data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) shows that Australia exported a total of 3.89 lakh tonnes of chickpeas in November 2025, nearly four times higher than the 0.98 lakh tonnes shipped in October. This clearly indicates that arrivals of the new chickpea crop have gathered strong momentum in Australia.
In November 2025, Australia exported around 2.31 lakh tonnes of chickpeas to India, far exceeding shipments to any other destination. This was followed by Bangladesh with 0.92 lakh tonnes and Pakistan with 0.36 lakh tonnes.
According to official data, Australia had recorded a strong chickpea export of 4.15 lakh tonnes in November 2024, of which India alone accounted for 3.29 lakh tonnes. Anticipating the possibility of India imposing import duties, importers had continued to source large volumes from Australia at that time.
As per the ABS report, India did not import any chickpeas from Australia in September 2025, while imports in October were limited to 0.40 lakh tonnes. However, imports surged sharply in November to 2.31 lakh tonnes. As a result, during the September–November 2025 quarter, India imported a total of 2.71 lakh tonnes of chickpeas from Australia.
During this quarter, Australia exported about 5.14 lakh tonnes of chickpeas in total. Besides India, shipments during the period included 1.14 lakh tonnes to Bangladesh, 0.83 lakh tonnes to Pakistan, and 0.30 lakh tonnes to the United Arab Emirates, while the remaining quantity was exported to other countries.
