India Pea Supply-Demand Outlook – Sharp Rise in Imports and Stocks Likely in 2025
★ According to the latest data, India's total pea supply in Rabi 2025 is expected to reach 38.46 lakh tons, significantly higher than 25.46 lakh tons in 2024 and 14.35 lakh tons in 2023. This sharp rise is mainly attributed to a surge in imports and higher carry-in stocks.
★ Pea production in Rabi 2025 is estimated at 10 lakh tons, slightly lower than 10.11 lakh tons in 2024 and 11.34 lakh tons in 2023.
★ India may import as much as 21 lakh tons of peas during the 2025 season, almost double the 11 lakh tons imported in 2024. Additionally, carry-in stocks are expected to increase to 7.46 lakh tons in 2025 from 4.35 lakh tons in 2024.
★ Domestic consumption is also projected to rise. After reaching 18 lakh tons in 2024, domestic use is expected to climb to 28 lakh tons in 2025.
★ Ending stocks are likely to grow from 7.46 lakh tons in 2024 to 10.46 lakh tons in 2025, suggesting ample availability in the country.
★ India’s pea supply is expected to remain strong in 2025, mainly due to high imports and robust carryover stocks. While domestic consumption is set to increase significantly, the elevated supply may keep pressure on prices.
★ India's pea imports in the 2025 financial year are expected to remain between 15–20 lakh tons. As of the end of July, around 4.2 lakh tons of peas are reported to be stocked at Indian ports.
★ With Canada and Russia’s fresh crops expected to arrive from October, imports may remain low in July, August, and September. ★ This temporary dip in arrivals could lead to increased offtake from port inventories, possibly pushing prices upward.
★ However, once new imports start arriving, price pressure may return.
