India Will Not Open Wheat Exports
★ India has formally told the World Trade Organization that it will keep the wheat‑export ban imposed in May 2022, when the commodity’s export status was changed from free to prohibited.
★ The government says the curb is still needed to safeguard domestic food security amid continued volatility in world prices.
★ The restriction will stay in place even though the farm ministry projects a record‐large 2024‑25 rabi harvest of about 115.4 million tonnes.
★ Authorities argue that maintaining the ban will help stabilise internal prices and ensure adequate public stocks.
★ Exports can still be cleared on a case‑by‑case basis for humanitarian relief or diplomatic, government‑to‑government requests, but commercial shipments remain blocked until conditions.
