Indian Cotton Association Lowers 2024-25 Crop Estimates
Due to lower crop production in Central India, the Cotton Association of India (CAI) has reduced its 2024-25 crop estimate by 2% to 295.30 lakh bales, down from the earlier projection of 301.75 lakh bales.
Compared to 327.45 lakh bales last season, a 10% decline in cotton acreage has led to lower production this year.
Government Estimates Also Reduced
- In its second advance estimate, the government lowered cotton production by 1.5% to 294.25 lakh bales, down from 299 lakh bales.
- A decline of 4 lakh bales in Gujarat and 3 lakh bales in Maharashtra is expected.
- Odisha's production may increase by 0.55 lakh bales.
Imports to Rise, Exports to Decline
- Cotton imports are expected to double to 32 lakh bales in 2024-25, compared to 15.20 lakh bales last year.
- By the end of February, 22 lakh bales had already been imported.
- Exports are projected to drop by 40% to 17 lakh bales, down from 28.36 lakh bales last year.
Consumption and Stock Forecast
- Domestic consumption remains steady at 315 lakh bales.
- By February-end, consumption was estimated at 142 lakh bales.
- Closing stock by September 30, 2025, is expected to be 23.49 lakh bales, compared to 30.19 lakh bales last year.
