India’s Agri-Food Export Performance in April–May Remains Satisfactory
New Delhi: Despite various challenges, competition, and trade barriers, India’s exports of agricultural and food products have continued at a satisfactory pace, with strong demand in global markets. According to data from the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), under the Ministry of Commerce, India exported 1,226,070 tons of basmati rice and 2,315,716 tons of non-basmati (regular) rice during April–May 2025.
Earlier, there were concerns that rice imports from India by African countries in large quantities during the first quarter (January–March) might lead to reduced demand in April–May, as these countries had significant stockpiles. However, APEDA data shows that India’s overall rice export performance remained strong. The fact that basmati rice maintained a monthly average shipment of over 600,000 tons is particularly encouraging. The outlook for continued strong export performance remains positive.
Additionally, India exported 169,727 tons of pulses, 98,681 tons of cereal-based processed products, and 94,861 tons of other whole grains during April–May 2025. It’s important to note that India has long imposed a trade ban on the export of wheat and its value-added products.
During the review period, India exported 126,661 tons of groundnuts and 106,507 tons of guar gum. Indian groundnuts continued to see strong demand in Southeast Asia, while guar gum exports performed well across the US, Europe, and other regions.
Exports of processed cashew kernels stood at 5,115 tons, while cashew shell liquid exports were around 3,500 tons. India faces tough competition in the global cashew market from countries like Vietnam, Indonesia, and Brazil. Given that, the April–May shipment volume is considered fairly satisfactory.
India also exported 39,834 tons of milled products during this period. Indian products remain competitively priced in global markets. Notably, India continues to be the world’s leading exporter of both rice and guar gum.
