India’s corn export outlook: Losing ground but signs of recovery
★ India has lost its position as the top corn supplier to Bangladesh, with Brazil capturing a dominant share of the market. The shift has been driven by higher domestic maize prices and rising demand for ethanol, which reduced India’s exportable surplus.
★ From India’s perspective, exports have dropped sharply—from 1.82 million tonnes to Bangladesh in 2022 to almost negligible levels in 2025. This highlights how domestic policy priorities like ethanol blending can directly impact export competitiveness.
★ However, there are early signs of recovery. With domestic prices easing, Indian corn is again becoming competitive in global markets. Exports to nearby countries like Nepal and emerging buyers such as Vietnam are picking up.
★ Going ahead, India’s export outlook will depend on three key factors: domestic maize availability, ethanol demand, and global price competitiveness. If production improves and prices remain stable, India could regain some share in regional markets, though Brazil’s strong presence will remain a challenge.
