International Pulse Market
Lentil Market Softens
★ Last week, the international lentil market saw a slight decline amidst light trade activity.
★ Despite a balance between farmer supply and exporter demand, the market remained somewhat weak.
★ Canadian processors and exporters are encouraging farmers to grow green lentils over red lentils this year.

Concerns in Pea Markets
★ The North American pulse market took a concerning turn in January.
★ The United States may impose a 25% import duty on Canada and Mexico starting February 1. However, if key economic agreements are finalized by the end of the month, the imposition may be delayed until March 1. Import duties, however, seem inevitable.
★ In addition, India will allow pea imports only until February 28, 2025. While pea availability in exporting countries remains strong, major importer India already has sufficient stock.

Desi Chickpeas – Focus on Indian Crop
★ Global chickpea markets are closely monitoring India’s rabi sowing data, now in its final stages. As of January 27, chickpea sowing has only reached 9.85 million hectares, up from 9.55 million hectares, but still below the five-year average of 10.1 million hectares.
★ Weather conditions remain favorable, suggesting strong production potential.
★ Australia has shipped 1 million tons of chickpeas, with 521,000 tons arriving at Indian ports between December 15 and January 25, according to manifests.
★ On one hand, good sowing in India hints at higher production, while on the other, large-scale imports from abroad and abundant pea stocks make the likelihood of price increases in the future very weak.
