New Delhi. Although, as expected, this time there has been a good increase in the sowing area of tuvar and moong, but the area of urad and moth is lagging behind last year.
There has been heavy monsoon rain in the major pulse producing states and there is a possibility of more rain in the future.
This may benefit the crop in some areas and cause damage in some other areas. Karnataka and Maharashtra produce the highest amount of tuvar,
Madhya Pradesh produces urad and moong-moth in Rajasthan. Gujarat is also an important producer of pulses. Monsoon activity remains in all these states.
Data from the Union Agriculture Ministry shows that in the current Kharif season, the gross production area of pulse crops has increased to 122.15 lakh hectares, which is more than the sowing area of 115.55 lakh hectares in the same period last year.
In comparison to last year, during the current Kharif season, the production area of Arhar (tuvar) jumped from 40.75 lakh hectares to 45.80 lakh hectares and the sowing area of moong increased from 30.55 lakh hectares to 34.05 lakh hectares,
but on the other hand, the area of Urad decreased from 30.80 lakh hectares to 29.05 lakh hectares and the area of Moth fell from 9.37 lakh hectares to 9.12 lakh hectares.
The sowing of horse gram has been almost equal to last year. The area of other pulses has improved from 3.80 lakh hectares to 3.91 lakh hectares.
According to industry and trade analysts, the weather of the next few weeks can prove to be decisive for pulses and especially for Urad and Moong-Moth crops.
Its early sown crop is flowering and grains are forming, while its sporadic harvesting preparations can start from next month.
If in the meantime the weather and rainfall conditions remain favourable then only better production can be expected.
