Jeera prices rose 0.24% to Rs 20,830 per quintal, supported by late start of new crop due to unfavourable weather in Gujarat.
Sowing started about a month late in key producing regions like Gujarat and Rajasthan, restricting initial supplies. However, prices did not see much of a jump due to sluggish demand and adequate stocks.
Production this year is estimated to be at par with last year, as crop conditions are better and sowing levels have been good.
India's cumin production reached 8.6 lakh tonnes in 11.87 lakh hectares in 2023-24, up sharply from 5.77 lakh tonnes in 9.37 lakh hectares last year.
Ongoing tensions in the Middle East have boosted export demand, especially from Europe and other regions preparing for festivals.
Cumin exports grew by 70.72% to 1,65,084 tonnes during April-December 2024 from 96,701 tonnes in the same period of 2023. In December itself, exports registered a monthly growth of 56.45%.
