Kabuli chana prices stable in Canada with little trading

The Kabuli chana (chickpea) market in Canada is experiencing stable prices with limited trading activity. Standard Kabuli chana of number 2 quality, which includes grains of at least 9 mm in size, has been priced at 40-41 cents per pound at the FOB farm level since mid-November.

However, for the upcoming new crop, prices are expected to decrease to around 30-32 cents per pound initially. The sowing of Kabuli chana for the new crop will take place in April-May 2024.

Canadian exporters are facing stiff competition from Kabuli chana produced in Argentina and Desi chana from Australia in the global market. Additionally, increased production in the U.S. has reduced the demand for imported Kabuli chana. The area for Kabuli chana cultivation in Canada is likely to either remain steady or increase slightly in the coming year, although concerns about potential root rot infestations may affect crop health.

Despite predictions of higher production of both Kabuli and Desi chana in Canada and Australia compared to last year, official production figures from StatsCan and ABARES suggest a more significant increase, which could put downward pressure on prices.

In India, the sowing of gram (chickpeas) is progressing ahead of last year’s pace, and the crop is expected to perform normally, with the possibility of improved production if favorable weather conditions continue.

This could further influence Kabuli chana prices in North America. The current price for smaller-sized Kabuli chana is approximately 35 cents per pound.
