Tiptur. The price of edible copra (Gari Gola) in Karnataka has surged to record levels in recent months as coconut production has been severely affected due to unfavourable weather conditions in the southern part of the state. Most of Karnataka's coconut and copra is grown in the southern districts. According to trade analysts, the price of edible copra has increased by more than 50 percent since March.
In Tiptur APMC, a major production and trading hub, the model price of edible copra ranged from Rs 14,000–15,000 per quintal in early March, which rose to Rs 20,000 per quintal by early June. On June 9, 2025, the model price further increased to Rs 21,500 per quintal, with the highest price reaching Rs 22,356 per quintal. The minimum price recorded was Rs 20,000 per quintal. In other key mandis such as Huliyar, Veera, Turuvelare, Channa, and even in Patna, the model price of ball copra also remained above Rs 20,000 per quintal.
An analyst from Tiptur noted that the model price of edible copra has crossed Rs 20,000 per quintal (Rs 200 per kg) for the first time and is now trading at a new record level of around Rs 22,500 per quintal. The sharp rise in price is primarily due to a significant decline in production during the last season. This year as well, production is estimated to have dropped by 50–60 percent. It is worth noting that the previous highest price of ball copra in Tiptur Mandi was Rs 19,800 per quintal during the 2016–17 season, around the time when online trading in copra began.
Copra is produced by drying coconut. India produces two types of copra—milling copra and ball copra. Milling copra is used for extracting coconut oil, while ball copra is consumed as a dry fruit. India is one of the leading global producers of coconut, copra, and its related products.
