New Delhi. The Central Government has approved the purchase of moong and sunflower from farmers at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) during the 2024-25 marketing season.
In an official letter sent to the Karnataka government, the Center has said that the MSP of moong has been fixed at Rs 8682 per quintal and the state government has been allowed to purchase a total of 22,215 tonnes at this price level. Similarly,
the Karnataka government has also been asked to purchase 13,210 tonnes of sunflower from farmers, whose minimum support price has been increased by 7.7 percent to Rs 7280 per quintal for the 2024-25 season.
The Union Minister of Food, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution had requested the Union Agriculture Minister to approve the government procurement of moong and sunflower at the minimum support price in Karnataka so that the producers can get relief. It is noteworthy that the Union Food Minister is an MP elected from Karnataka on a BJP ticket.
Karnataka is one of the major producers of moong and sunflower during the Kharif season. The central government has increased the minimum support price of moong by only 1.6 percent for the marketing season of 2024-25 as compared to the 2023-24 season because it has already increased substantially.
The reality is that moong has the highest support price among pulses crops. Due to good monsoon rains and favorable weather in Karnataka,
the production of moong and sunflower is expected to be better. The arrival of the new crop of early sowing of moong may start next month.
