Kharif crop acreage in Gujarat nearly equal to last year

Ahmedabad. In the western state of Gujarat, the sowing of kharif crops has been completed, and the final picture indicates a marginal increase in acreage. Despite limited damage, the overall crop condition remains normal. According to the latest weekly figures released by the State Agriculture Department, the total kharif crop acreage in Gujarat had reached 8.42 million hectares as of September 29, slightly higher by 8,000 hectares compared to 8.412 million hectares last year.
Official data shows that compared to last year, paddy acreage increased from 0.887 million hectares to 0.904 million hectares, and bajra acreage rose from 0.168 million hectares to 0.173 million hectares. However, jowar acreage dropped from 19,000 hectares to 12,000 hectares, and maize declined from 0.286 million hectares to 0.281 million hectares. Despite this, the total acreage of paddy and coarse cereals improved from 1.374 million hectares last year to 1.380 million hectares this season.
In contrast, pulses acreage saw good growth, increasing from 0.399 million hectares to 0.456 million hectares. Within this category, tur (pigeon pea) acreage jumped from 0.237 million hectares to 0.301 million hectares, and urad (black gram) rose from 13,000 hectares to 16,000 hectares, while moong (green gram) acreage declined from 55,000 hectares to 49,000 hectares.
Oilseed acreage also registered a notable increase of 0.310 million hectares. Groundnut acreage surged from 1.907 million hectares to 2.202 million hectares, and castor acreage expanded from 0.620 million hectares to 0.666 million hectares. However, soybean acreage declined from 0.301 million hectares to 0.278 million hectares, and sesame dropped from 49,000 hectares to 41,000 hectares. Groundnut crop conditions are reported to be good.
On the other hand, cotton acreage in Gujarat declined from 2.368 million hectares last year to 2.082 million hectares this year, while guar acreage fell from 85,000 hectares to 75,000 hectares.
